Fight For Taiwan only
By Dr. Yang Hsu-Tung May 7, 2000

Democratic Taiwan has a overused constitution. How pity on principle over unreasonable country's constitution? The spiritual foundation of the ROC (Democratic Taiwan) armed forces has been built on the so-called "five great faiths"— principle
— leader
— duty
— honor
— country

The "principle" at first, the last called as "country".

Is Taiwan a country or province? What is the mean of "principle"? If Taiwan is threatened by mainland China, "the principle" would protect Taiwan, and fight for Taiwanese people?

ROC armed force included soldiers and military weapons, those who lived in Taiwan are supported by Taiwanese people, who dare to say ROC's army won't fight for island?

In the United States, it pledged on
— duty
— honor
— country

We knew that in Taiwan, the principle refers to the "Three Principles of the People" of founding father Dr. Sun Yat-sen and founder of the Kuomintang. Leader refers to the supreme commander of the armed forces, who is usually the head of state. When the KMT was in power, principle and leader were relevant because the military was commanded and controlled by KMT.

Now, Taiwan is a democratic country, with the ascent to power by the DPP's Chen Shui-bian, "principle" and "leader" appear even more obsolete and anachronistic. In a modern armed forces should pledge allegiance to the country, and make oath to protect Taiwanese people with peace.

If 15% Taiwan mainlanders and 85% native Taiwanese people can't share with peace in Taiwan over China's threats, it would defeat in internal civil war.

Taiwan's President-elect Chen Shui-bian will not call a referendum on independence from mainland China. "Unless China invades or uses force, we will not declare Taiwan independence unilaterally," he added.

April 10, 2000 —
Mainland Chinese state media said that Taiwan's vice President-elect Annette Lu was looking to carry the island into an "abyss of war" by making pro-independence remarks. People's Daily and Xinhua News agency articles are peppered with pejorative, calling Lu "perverse," "shameless" a "traitor" and "scum of the nation".

April 10, 2000 —
For happy with Beijing, the CIA has fired one intelligence officer and reprimanded six managers for errors that led to the U.S. bombing of the mainland Chinese Embassy in Belgrade during NATO's air war against Yugoslavia.

April 10, 2000 —
Brian Kennedy, vice president of the Claremont Institute in California, claimed recently that Taiwan does not have effective air or missile defense systems, the United States has totally ignored the nature and magnitude of the mainland Chinese threat to Taiwan.

Under critical condition as Cross-Strait issues, that the armed forces in Taiwan pledge allegiance to constitution, and obey the order from their supreme commander, who is the constitutionally elected president, governments, come and go, so do their leaders in a democratic country.

On the other hand, "pledge allegiance to the constitution" that so-called "constitution" should keep watch on Taiwan's prosperity, democracy, and survival rights.
