Dear Prime Minister John Howard,

It is not a good news for you and your government.

Sydney, May 12

--- Australia's Chinese community warned that it will withdraw its support for Prime Minister John Howard's ruling Liberal party over its attitude to anti-Asia MP Pauline Hanson.

As we have known that Hanson's campaign to halt Asian immigration and aboriginal welfare funding seen as racist by many Australians, has outraged the ethnic community, particularly the large Asian Australian population.

Queensland labor opposition leader Peter Beattie said support within the Liberal party for Hanson has caused Australia enormous damage in Asia, fueled by media reports the party was preparing give its preference to one nation.

This is not the time for complicating the issue of Asia immigratory policy. What's Australia wants is how to make economic development, and keep more "security" in Asia.

There are many sensitive problems in Asia region.

A. India bombs nuclear weapons, it would become a dangerous nuclear arms race among India, mainland China and Pakistan.

B. Indonesia would be ruined by protests, riots, looting and gunfire.

C. Refugee would threat the "security" of Australia.

D. Newly coming Asian crisis that concerned about "economic and political instability" would damage Australia prosperity.

How to prevent a repetition of the Asia crisis, the region itself is clear about what is needed; more concrete help through trade and financial measures.

By startling contrast; Taiwan's economic has been named the strongest in Asia in a poll of corporate executives in ten Asian edition of the Far Eastern Economic Review.

Taiwan was rated as Asia's strongest economic by 29.8 percent of business leaders polled, followed by mainland China with 18.2 percent and Singapore with 17.7 percent. According to the magazine poll, the results of which were published in local news-papers yesterday afternoon(May 13, 1998). Meanwhile, the Asian wall-street Journal highlighted on Tuesday(May 14, 1998) Taiwan's economic growth rate, which it said would reach six percent for the first quarter, exceeding forecasts by most economists.

The report predicted Taiwan's overall economic growth rate for the year would reach 6.18 percent.

Taiwan is a democratic country. People are educated by free elections. Taiwan's miracle not only "economy" but also "democracy".

Taiwan have had transferred its dominant one party to multiple parties is very smooth and peaceful on the political reform.

I worried about the Hanson's anti-Asian policy could hurt Taiwan people. That all my friends and TT Foundation's members are keeping friendship with Australia, please. Don't let political issue disturbed our expectancy.

Then, with my best wishes for you and your government.

Sincerely Yours,
Yang Hsu-Tung.
