¡@¡@¡@Mr. Secretary General Walter Schwimmer,

Oct. 27, 2000 ---

As tens of thousands of Filipinos marches demanding President Joseph Estrada step down, by the scandal erupted with allegations Estrada took illegal gambling kickbacks.

In Taiwan; people watched television on the focus of legislators¡¦ political show. Some legislators march demanding President Chen step down, because of ¡§political conflicts¡¨ over administration of new government.

On the other hand; opponents my be do nothing for people but play game in jam with boring talk show.

Typhoon leaves 44 dead

Nov. 3, 2000 ---

The worst storm to hit in decades, Typhoon Xangsane tore into Taiwan yesterday claiming the lives of at least 44 people before heading out to sea.

The northern city of Keelung was worst hit, where 15 religious followers drowned in a basement and 14 elderly people were also killed on the ground floor in a flooded nursing home in the same area, reports said.

Speaking at a disaster response center, Premier Chang Chun-hsiung acknowledged the severity the storm which has caused an unusually high number of fatalities.

¡§This is one of the worst typhoons Taiwan has seen in 30 years,¡¨ Chang said.

Nov 2, 2000 ---

The mishap of the Singapore Airlines (SIA) plane crash has shattered not only the nearly perfect safety record of the flagship carrier in Southeast Asia, but also hearts of many family members of the deceased.

At least 79 people have been confirmed dead in the mysterious crash of the Boeing 747-400 jetliner bound for Los Angeles, according to the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA).

CAA¡¦s Deputy Director-General Chang Kuo-cheng, in giving the figures, said that of the 179 passengers and crew, 56 people suffering from burns and bone fractures were still in hospital.

However, 44 people, including the pilot and two co-pilots, miraculously escaped from the crash with barely a scratch.

The fortunate survivors included a newly-married Taiwan couple who were planning to go to Los Angeles for their honeymoon by taking the ill-fated SQ0006.

The casualties involved residents from 18 countries, including 55 from Taiwan, 47 Americans, 11 Singaporeans, 11 Indians, eight Malaysians, five Indonesians, four Mexicans, four Britons, and others from Thailand, New Zealand, Vietnam, Australia, Canada, Cambodia, Germany, Japan, Philippines, Ireland and Spain.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed condolences to the victims and said help to the family members would be offered at the ROC offices in respective countries.

At the same time that nearly 1, 000 protesters besieged the parliamentary compound in Taipei for the entire day, condemning the KMT-dominated Legislature for its recall new president Cheng and ill-fated nuclear power plant on Nov. 3, 2000.

Meanwhile; Taiwan stocks rebounded partly because of softening domestic pressure from the opposition party due to the aftermath of the typhoon and the Singapore Airline plane crash.

So, we found something funny for ¡§immatural democracy¡¨ that parties¡¦ diversity would jeopardize nation¡¦s future by way of ¡§legislatures¡¦ rights¡¨.

How to cease fire on the issues of impeachment and recall is the most important question.

However, everyone don¡¦t see civil war would provoke at this moment of social desperate situation.

Proving the old adage ¡§Politics make strange bedfellows,¡¨ Chen Shui-bian has selected KMT vice-chairman Vincent Siew to represent Taiwan in the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). While stressing that he would seek approval from KMT chairman Lien Chan before making final decision, Siew said there would be no reason to decline the opportunity if it was for the best interest of the country.

Unfortunately; this decision would be changed by KMT chairman¡¦s disgrace after meeting of President Cheng.

Apparently, new government needs your suggestion and Taiwanese people need your concern.

Yours Sincerely,
Yang Hsu-Tung.
