Dear Mr. Vice President Al Gore,
Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton,
"If Beijing continue to squeeze Taiwan diplomatically,
the people of Taiwan will be "very disappointed."
Lin Chong-pin, a vice chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council
said that.
If the people here are in "utter despair", Lin warned,
a leader that reflects the voice of the majority in Taiwan may
emerge in future presidential elections.
In such a scenario, he said, the new leader might be mandated
to change the course of the nation, and perhaps even its name.
Beijing's "double-dealing" has led to heated debate
in the Legislative Yuan over whether the government should change
its policy of engaging. However; the Taiwan government will
continue to strengthen and expand cross-strait exchanges.
Wu An-chia, a vice chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council
(MAC), said during a cross-strait conference in Taipei that
these efforts contribute to the welfare of the people on both
sides across the Taiwan strait. He said the results of several
polls conducted by the MAC and private institution show that
50 percent of people surveyed in Taiwan and mainland
China have a positive attitude toward existing cross-strait
cultural exchanges, and believe these exchanges help promote
mutual understanding between the two sides. Most mainland visitors
to Taiwan say that the exchanges help them understand more about
the island.
Hong Kong, Nov. 21--- Martin Lee, Hong Kong's champion of democracy
and the leader of the region's democratic party, will lead a
delegation to Taiwan on Nov. 28 to observe the December 5 election.
In addition to observing the elections for the country's legislature,
the mayorships of Taipei and Kaohsiung cities, and city council
seats, the approximately 20 strong delegation will also meet
President Lee Teng-hui.
It is understood that Martin Lee has worked out several issues
which the delegation hopes to discuss with President Lee, including
the possibility of his meeting mainland counterpart Jiang Zemin,
the issue of national unification, and relations between Hong
Kong and Taiwan.
Taiwan; the model of democratic country in Asia, following
the way of international law. We hope to see the welfare of
both side. Under spirit of human rights and democratic
government, we can step up to "peaceful unification".
Taiwan need your support.
