Explore Taiwanese society's sorrowful mentality

The pressure Taiwanese people bear today was rooted from the time when Japanese troops and immigrants dominated Taiwan. During that period of time, Taiwanese people were forced to live by compulsory survival principles Japanese dominators designed; as long as Taiwanese people follow the rules diligently, they did not have to worry about their basic survival needs and they can get comparably fairer arrangements concerning livelihood and the like. Japanese colonial policies in the end gradually allowed Taiwanese to become Japanese by changing their last names into Japanese. Taiwanese aboriginal inhabitants however, did not find assimilating with Japanese culture, colonial policies as well as Japanese education to be that easy. Because they were one with Nature and they were spiritually free, so when Japanese trespassed and disrupted their living environment, they sought ways to fight them back though in vain. Before Japanese colonized Taiwan, Han people (i.e. the predominate ethic group in China) had already learned to compromise with the invading forces as long as the latter would not disrupt their survival. During the fifty years Japanese colonized Taiwan, Taiwanese learned to follow the rules and play along with their Japanese dominators. Gradually Taiwanese people's personality and thinking became assimilated with Japanese culture. After Taiwan was recovered, there came the era of Kuomintang (the Nationalist Party) and soon followed by the February 28th Incident (二二八事變). People at the time did not approve of the National government's policies, because many of them were obviously implying disrespects towards Taiwanese culture, customs and languages, despite the fact that Taiwanese civilians share the same Han culture and languages with the National government that had just arrived from mainland China. Hence people always acted as if they were obedient to the National government, when in fact there always existed a fire burning in them.

Every generation's state of consciousness influences the next generation's. Since our generation lacks a proper and sufficient recognition towards Taiwan, the education of our new generation becomes problematic: Furthering one's education or going out to find a job are all for the sake of earning more money. The pressures resulted from competing for a good college mislead young people to think education and examinations are nothing but means to get them somewhere in the society. And what makes the problem worse is that, the contents of textbooks mention very little about Taiwanese culture! Many people have the concept that only low-class people speak Taiwanese, so there is no need for us to learn nor even study this language. Prejudice like this becomes even more serious in preserving Taiwanese aboriginal culture and language. There had been almost nobody who studied Taiwanese aboriginal culture, let along the fact that the worst cops are sent to maintain the village's peace. Since there are always so many problems hidden under the National government's table, no wonder Democratic Progress Party (民主進步黨) and other newly established political parties have so many supporters.

Why has Taiwan lost control over its society's peace and order? The major reason is that, even though we use Taiwan's resources, we live here and raise our children on this island, but we lack knowledge and recognition toward this land. After the National government began to allow its civilians to visit relatives in mainland China, I went and I was disappointed to see mainland China today is nothing like what I read from textbooks when I was still a student. The major problem we are facing today is that, contemporary Taiwanese people want democracy, freedom as well as Taiwan's autonomy. Funny as it really is, the Chinese history and geography we learned from textbooks are separated from the reality by a big gap! Our different generations have dramatically different think processes: People's conceptions during the era of Japanese colonization are dramatically different from conceptions during the era of the National government as well as our next generation's. Different systems of thinking process will give rise to disorders in the society. What we must consider now is changes in Taiwanese people's mental states as well as the government's educational policies. Since 1981 up until now, the most serious crimes committed were committed by people with the "nine-years of compulsory education".

During the early era of Taiwan's recovery, there were rarely any people involved in politics; those who were involved were mostly elected by the National government. These people then funded corporate bodies with the locally powerful. So once the government has lost its people's confidence and trust in it, there would arise the powerful underworld societies (or gang-associated organizations). The leaders of these underworld societies, in order to compete for local leadership and individual "supreme virtues" with one another, they would take part in the election for parliamentarians, funding foundations and organizing charities. Just imagine what kind of influence can these underworld organization leaders give to Taiwan's education?! In the past, people's attitudes toward joining the military force was positive, but now everyone is scared of losing their sons if mainland China ever declares war on Taiwan. On the other hand, the second and third generations of those came from various mainland provinces with Kuomintang fifty years ago, have grown to feel the need to identify with Taiwanese culture themselves, hence there came another political party called "The New Party" (新黨). The reason why Taiwan is facing so many dangers, like the Communist Chinese interfering with Taiwan's autonomy, our military forces are regressing and the forming of emigrating trend etc., is because there are so little people who love this island they grow up on. If we do not understand Taiwan's history and geographical environment, naturally we would not appreciate everything this island offers us, and we would only plan to make a lot of money in Taiwan before emigrate abroad. Those who do not have the means to "escape" abroad would be in favor of compromising with mainland China, while there are still people in favor of declaring war on mainland China. Taiwan nowadays is in the state of social turmoil.
