An American woman who tried to press charges for sexual assault in Japan says that the police dragged their feet. Although her attacker confessed, he ended up with a suspended sentence because he supports his parents and has no prior record.

Because of the stigma on sex crimes in Japan, woman victims are considered dirty, and the pursuit of justice can be a humiliating and frustrating experience (Jan. 7, 2000).
