Time to start BUFFD

The accelerated pro-China policy of President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) administration has seriously compromised the sovereignty of Taiwan, and it may eliminate the possibility of establishing a free independent nation.

Democratization is now a steep uphill struggle against the well-entrenched quasi-one-party dictatorship of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) that is already under the control of China’s United Front Strategy (UFS).

We propose a “Borderless United Front for Democracy” (BUFFD), which would galvanize the freedom-loving people of Taiwan and the world, and prevent the demise of Taiwan’s democracy.

BUFFD must be a movement of non-governmental grassroots volunteers, dedicated to non-violent promotion of democracy by utilizing the Internet. Communication centers and leaders could be selected as the movement grows.

The no-cost BUFFD would supplement conventional diplomacy by encouraging every individual everywhere to advocate democracy around the clock. It would not be like the few sporadic meetings within the conventional diplomacy that usually involve only a limited number of countries.

Conventional diplomacy has not been able to effectively promote democracy even in the UN because of its inability to cope with the UFS of China. Consequently, besmirching Taiwan as a “troublemaker” and Taiwan’s isolation from the world community have been tolerated by the West, implying tacit approval. The instigator of blatant human rights violations is none other than China, the worst violator on record.

Similarly, the UFS has guided China to distort recent calls for greater Web freedom by the US as “information imperialism.” Such smear tactics have also been applied to the Tibetan leader Dalai Lama and the exiled Xinjian (Uighur) leader Rebiya Kadeer. After years of UFS manipulation and media distortion about cheap labor, large markets and ruthless military threats, China has nearly succeeded in silencing the voices of various dissident groups.

Moreover, it is now using new-found wealth and technology to modernize armed forces which threaten to invade Taiwan and also menace the security of Asia. Further, by incorporating the new wealth into the UFS, China is undermining the economy and the security of the entire free world. According to D.J. McGuire, an author focusing on China’s role in aiding terrorist states, it has also armed or funded adversaries of the West, including Iran, al-Qaeda, the Taliban, North Korea and former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

The Victims of Communism Memorial in Washington attests to the dangerous nature of communist China. For almost a century, the Chinese Communist Party has failed to accord basic human rights to its citizenry. Ironically, there will be no such reform in the foreseeable future.

In the name of the victims of communism in China and the victims of the 228 Incident at the hands of the KMT in Taiwan, it is time for all democracy advocates to join hands; tear down the facade of the so-called “Peaceful Rise and Socialism with Chinese Characteristics” and expose the tyrannical nature of Chinese autocracy. We must bring down the KMT-dominated media and expose the true selfish and opportunistic character of the KMT leadership. The party’s inability to restitute the massive amounts of embezzled public assets even after decades of waiting and the double standards used in persecuting and prosecuting former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) are just two examples of the corruption that must be eliminated.

The final goal of BUFFD would be a Swiss-type neutral Taiwan with a colorful yet peaceful multi-ethnic society bound by friendship and trust, and looking forward to eventual worldwide peace fostered by democratization.
