SID denies prosecutor
involved in corruption

The Special Investigation Division (SID) yesterday denied reports that a female
prosecutor was involved in a corruption scandal.
Yueh Fang-ju (越方如), currently a prosecutor with the Taiwan High Court
Prosecutors’ Office, was one of the SID prosecutors in charge of the corruption
cases against former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁).
The Taipei District Court last week ordered the detention of Chen Yu-chen (陳玉珍),
another female prosecutor at the Taiwan High Court Prosecutors’ Office, on
suspicion that she had received bribes from businessman Shih Yung-hua (施永華) to
help him cover up his illegal electronic gaming casino business in New Taipei
City (新北市).
The SID said Chen Yu-chen was suspected of taking about NT$22 million
(US$755,000) in bribes and receiving special benefits, such as luxury gifts and
meals at upscale restaurants, from the businessman.
The Chinese-language Next Magazine said in its latest edition yesterday that
after the SID launched the investigation against Chen Yu-chen, Yueh made
inquiries with SID prosecutors about the progress of the investigation, which
led to suspicions that Yueh may have also be involved in the bribery scandal.
The report also alleged that Yueh has been named a defendant in the Chen Yu-chen
case.
SID spokesman Chen Hung-ta (陳宏達) said the report was incorrect.
Yueh has not made any inquiries about the Chen Yu-chen investigation, the
spokesman said.
As for the magazine’s allegation that Yueh had tried to make contact with Shih’s
lawyer, the spokesman said the SID would investigate the matter.
Asked for comment, Yueh she said she had nothing to say since the report was a
fabrication.
