Dear Mr. Kofi A. Annan,
Paris, Dec. 13 ---
Wei Jiangsheng, mainland China's most prominent dissidents said on Sunday (Dec. 12,
1998) that the "concept of New Taiwanese" espoused recently by ROC President Lee
Teng-hui, is a doctrine full of political wisdom.
The "New Taiwanese" concept cannot hamper efforts to unify China, he said,
adding that there had been no trouble when people in the mainland referred to the
"New Shanghai people" or the "New Beijingese".
For the moment, Wei said, he suggests that people in Taiwan help with democracy
activities in mainland China so as to help accelerate democratic development there. During
his planned visit to Taiwan, Wei said, he will have two messages for the people of Taiwan.
One --- is that while emphasizing they are "New Taiwanese" the Taiwan people
need not stress that they are not "Chinese". By saying they are not Chinese, the
people of Taiwan people would disappoint people in mainland China, and such a
pronouncement could have disastrous consequences, he warned. Another message, he said, is
that while Taiwan independence may be the right of the Taiwan people and something that
would be supported by Chinese democracy activists overseas. It is not and will never be
acceptable to the authorities in mainland China.
We on Sunday joined groups calling for the formation of an Asian human rights alliance.
Human rights was building in democratic condition; only keep democracy, the
both side of cross-straits will unification again. Faced with the Asian
financial crisis and with many reforms hitting snags mainland China has turned to a more
cautions track from the bold economic opening-up path it embarked on 20 years analysts
say. But the Beijing leadership at an annual economic conference last week vowed
to press ahead with its reforms. "In 1999, China will continue to move
forward with its reforms and opening up drive, with the focus on expanding domestic demand
to promote economic growth" the official Xinhua New Agency reported.
On the other hand; we are fighting against barbarism. There in only one way
of putting it rights, treaties when it is to their interest to do so. We must make it to
their interest to do so.
In our view; both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, each invokes His air
against the other, it may seem strange that any man should dare to ask a just God's
assistance in wringing bread from the sweat of other men's faces; but let us judge not,
that we be not judged the prayer of both should not be answered; that of neither has been
answered fully, for the Almighty has his own purposes.
Sincerely Yours,
Yang Hsu-Tung.
