"From beginning to end," President Jiang Zemin said, "we must be vigilant against infiltration, subversive activities and separatist activities of international and domestic hostile force". With trials against dissident in two cities completed on Tuesday (Dec. 17, 1998) and tough statement by President Jiang Zemin lambasting western-style democracy Friday.

Mainland China has sent an important message to its people, if you organize political dissent, you will go to jail. To face the changing social style of Beijing repression under-scores and important transformation in the way mainland China is being governed. A line appears to have been drawn between organized dissent, which is being smashed, and other activities that were not tolerated in the past by the totalitarian state.

Indeed, mainland China today supports a bizarre mixture of freedom and repression of Mao suits and miniskirts, manacles and mobile phones.

There was esoteric debate about social "chaos" --- the great fear of communist officials, and weather a degree of chaos was acceptable if it meant greater political freedom. And somebody asked; were Chinese peasants educated and cultured enough to sustain democracy ? Dissent Ren Wanding was in a despondent mood. Asked whether a crack down on members of the Chinese Democratic Party (CDP) would end with the trials of key members, the veteran activist said: "No"!

There're going to be very thorough about this. They want to wipe out the Chinese Democratic Party" said Ren, who is also affiliated with the party.

Exiled mainland Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng will begin an unprecedented visit to Taiwan on Monday (Dec. 21, 1998) that underscores calls for democratic change in communist China and the sensitive relationship between Beijing and Taipei coming after election described by Taiwan as a model for reform in mainland China. Wei's nine-day sojourn will likely spark comparisons between the island's robust democracy and continuing one-party rule on the mainland.

In our view; we can't believe the communist China, because of one-party's autocratic government can not let people's wishes in public. Democratic Taiwan is mainland Chinese future.

President Lee Teng-hui has signaled his willingness to eventually meet mainland Chinese President Jiang Zemin, noting an annual meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders presents an opportunity, a Japanese news paper reported. Lee has said he would be willing to visit mainland China on a "mission of peace", but mainland China, which considers Taiwan a wayward province, has said it would refuse Lee's demand to be received in his capacity as the ROC President.

Lee was also quoted as saying he wasn't considering running again for the presidency when his term runs out in 2,000, but would continue as chairman of the ruling Kuomintang through 2002, the paper reported.

In our view; Beijing government want to reunify with Taiwan, but give an advance announcement that Taiwan was a part of mainland, despite Taiwan's matured democratic system and fact of sovereign. Most of Taiwan people are likely the meeting of Lee-Jiang's direct negotiation. Unfortunately that bilateral meeting with Jiang at APEC was unlikely as long as mainland China continues to protest the Republic of China leader's presence at the regional summit.
