A leading mainland Chinese dissident sent into exile last year; Wei Jingsheng, Thursday urged the United States to take a tougher line with Beijing following its renewed crack down on dissent. The United States could restrict mainland Chinese imports or halt all "questionable" technology transfers, if it really wanted to punish the Chinese regime, Wei wrote in the New York Times.

In spite of occasional lip service to "openness" he argued, the Communist Party's main objective is still to "sustain its tyranny". "The authorities have consistently and swiftly moved to quash not only political organizations, but also trade unions, peasants' associations, and unapproved religious gathering" he said. He also criticized U.S. foreign policy for handing the Communist Party "diplomatic victories" notably an official visit from U.S. President Bill Clinton in June and July. Mainland Chinese leaders have merely stepped up their crackdown on opponents --- arresting 70 people this year --- without fear of sanction" he charged.

In our view; the history of Chinese Ch'in dynasty at rich and powerful summit; over this period, people was controlled and numerous dissidents are buried alive. We are afraid that strong communist China would do the same thing under sustaining its tyranny.

Mainland China is to try a fourth activist Sunday for "endangering state security" sources said Thursday, as dissidents across the country launches a hunger strike in protest at heavy sentences handed down to three pro-democracy campaigners.

Mainland China earlier this week handed down heavy jail sentences to three prominent dissidents in a crackdown on the activities of the fledgling opposition China Democracy Party. They were accused of trying to subvert the state.
