Powerful nations and pirate immigrants were the new bloods in Taiwan
Long time ago, the island, a origin of the Malayan people. During the time of Chin Shih Huang's rein, the First Emperor of the Chin Dynasty, the island was famed as the deities' habitat! Later in Ming Dynasty, Cheng Jy-Long brought together the pirates, took in the poor and the suffered, and founded their base in the Jia-I, Beigun area. The Emperor acknowledged Cheng's power along the south-east coast, hence made him a feudal lord and gave him the authority to wipe off other pirates, as well as to sign commercial treaties with the Dutch. Since then, migrants from southern China came to Taiwan in great numbers. Before the Dutch came, the island was ruled by the Spanish and the Portuguese respectively; later the Dutch defeated them and established the East-India Company as its administrative organization. Its priests went deep into the mountains, educated the indigenous people for thirty years - eighty percent of the natives were converted to Christianity and, their life was improved to an extended degree. These were the meritorious deeds of the Dutch priests.
