Dear Mr. Newt Gingrich,

That's Taiwan. Taiwan get a boost for competitiveness early this week(June 6, 1998) when the Geneva-based World Economic Forum(WEF) made public its 1998 ranking on global competitiveness.

Despite Asia's financial turmoil, Taiwan rose to sixth place from last year's eight in the WEF's rating of 53 economics in the world. The ranking was the best Taiwan has ever received since 1979.

Especially encouraging for Taiwan was its labor quality ranked third in the world, and government efficiency, seventh. As expected, Taiwan fared poor in infrastructure, 23rd , transparency, 13, and management, 12.

Overall, however, Taiwan trailed behind Singapore(1), Hong Kong(2), the United States(3), Britain(4), and Canada(5). It was ahead of the Netherlands(7), Switzerland(8), Norway(9), and Luxembourg(10).

Taiwan's strong showing, along with Singapore and Hong Kong, also speaks of the fact the three "Chinese economics" are the least affected by Asia's worst financial crisis in decade.

Taiwan is the best friend of United States, but "one China Policy" dumping Taiwan into "political stress" and "Beijing's threat".

We, very thanks to U.S. Congress. Taipei.

June 6'

The Republic of China welcomes a U.S. Congressional resolution urging President Bill Clinton to demand Beijing renounce the use of force against Taiwan. Foreign Ministry spokesman Roy Wu said on Saturday(June 6, 1998).

The non-binding resolution notes Taiwan's desire to play a positive role in resolving Asia's current financial crisis and affirms the support of the American people for Taiwan's security. The resolution demands the United States honor its previous commitments to its "one China" policy and maintain its interest in a peaceful resolution to the "Taiwan Strait issue".

In further said the American people desire strong relations with people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and that the U.S. government should take all necessary actions to ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, while continuing mutually beneficial trade relations with Taiwan's vibrant economy.

Review the history of communist China; the economic reformed is not tied to democratic change.

The riches of mainland China means that Chinese-communist is right. It is not necessary to change political structure.

Sincerely Yours,
Yang Hsu-Tung.
