Dear Mrs. Madeleine Korbel Albright,
There are no words that can express our great sorrow at the loss of U.S. capital police
officers John Gibson, and Jacob J.J. chest nut were killed when a man identified as
Russell Weston, 41, opened fire with a 0.38 caliber revolver on Friday(July 24, 1998).
The unfortunate violent incident on capital Hill in Washington D.C. in which two police
officers were shot to death by a crazed gunman, should not only remind the American public
of the need to change America's casual attitude toward possession of dangerous weapons,
but also the extension of terrorism.
In our view, it is only a matter of time before some individual, whether because of
mental instability, a gangster with something to prove, or possessing some other motive,
stages a revenge attack on a government official, politician, or possibly even the head of
state.
We think the education of democracy and human rights need fully guidance.
Thus Taiwan officials should learn a lesson from the latest unfortunate incident in
Washington and do something last to beef up security at all levels of government in
which acts of violence can't overturn the democratic process.
