Kashmiri militants rebuffed India¡¦s offer of a cease-fire to coincide with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan threatening to step up their attacks in the violent Himalayan region.

¡§We do not accept or believe India¡¨, said Mushtag Askari, a spokesman for the Pakistan-based Al Badr guerrilla group. ¡§Jehad (Holy War) is the only solution¡¨.

Willingly or not, President Chen Shui-bian isn¡¦t placing the future of Taiwan in the hands of a small group of senior fundamentalists of the Taiwan Independence Party (TAIP) and the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). In concerted efforts, these democratic-minded scholars, politicians and businessmen, have successfully slowed but steady wins the race that may lead to give up Taiwan sovereignty on dealing with the mainland.

¡§Following fundamentalist guidance, President Chen rejects the one-China principle and insists that both unification and independence are equal possibilities for Taiwan. This adamant attitude has virtually sealed off all doors to resuming dialogue with Beijing. Without negotiations, relations with the mainland will remain deadlocked; and Taiwan¡¦s current political, economic and social turmoil will be prolonged,¡¨ a few unification¡¦s parties said that.

In our view, if President Chen reject to embrace fundamentalist beliefs and does heed the advice of his most respected adviser and the ruling party¡¦s chairman, he will be inviting disaster for Taiwan by way of Beijing¡¦s invasion in Taiwan internal chaos.

Why Taiwanese people aren¡¦t so much believed in Beijing¡¦s statement in ¡§one China principle¡¨?
As we have known that over the last few years, mainland China had made no progress in the areas of freedom of expression, association and religious belief and cited rights concerns voiced by members of the Falun Gong spiritual groups which Beijing banned in July 1999.

Beijing¡¦s ¡§military threat¡¨ was the majority worrisome stress in Taiwan.¡@
