Dear Mr. Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi,
   Mr. President Clinton,
   Mr. Prime Minister Tony Blair,

Taiwan will hold its next presidential election in March 2000. The Democratic Progressive Party, which formally espouses independence for Taiwan, could conceivably upset the Kuomintang, which has ruled the island for the past half-century and remains committed to Taiwan's eventual reunification with mainland.

Back then, angered by Taiwan's first direct presidential elections, Beijing fired missiles into the waters near the island, and the Clinton administration counted by sending an armada including two aircraft carries to help protect the island.

Two years later, the Clinton administration and Beijing have made up to one another. But this accommodation could easily fall apart again over Taiwan, particularly if events on this island force America to make a choice between its democratic principles and its desire for a stable Asia.

Russia has a warm meeting on Monday (Nov. 22, 1998). Taiwan said (Nov. 29, 1998) Chinese President Jiang Zemin's threat to use force against the island indicated the mainland still believed in violence to resolve issues "what Jiang said in Tokyo merely reflected that the Chinese communists still blindly believe in violence, always thinking in a hegemonic way to resolve cross-strait issues." Chang King-yuh, chairman of the Taiwan Cabinet's Mainland Affairs Council, told reporters on Saturday (Nov. 29, 1998).

Jiang told a Tokyo news conference during his visit to Japan that Beijing would not renounce the use of force against Taiwan if the island kept up a separatist drive. "We firmly oppose the independence of Taiwan." Jiang said.

Washington, Nov. 28, 1998 ---

The reports said that the mainland Chinese government might be building a powerful anti-satellite laser that could deprive the U.S. military of key advantage in any future conflict in Asia by disabling America's fleet of "spies in the sky" Pentagon has warned.

In our view; Asia's power would be instead by "growing mainland China".

Taiwan is the key point to do defense against Beijing's threat.

Taiwan need your support.

Sincerely Yours,
Yang Hsu-Tung.
