Dear Mr. Kofi A. Annan,
Jakarta ----
Rain drenched the activists with wooden staves and riot officers
with clubs, but the adversaries didn't budge. Instead, they exuberantly
traded taunts in the latest round of Indonesia's student protests.
"Who wants to be killed? Step up if you want to
be victim", the soldiers chanted on a Jakarta
highway last month. Rhythmically pounding their batons on reinforced
plastic shields. The bedraggled students stepped closer, arm linked
as they launched into a chorus from a democracy song. Then their
bravado fizzled, and they traipsed off into the darkness.
The story about monkey and dog; a monkey hugs a dog in Bangladesh
capital Dhaka yesterday (Jan. 21, 1999). The monkey's owner says
the two became very fond of each other after the dog was abandoned
by its mother few weeks after its birth about two months ago and
have since lived together. It is funny that animals do it, but human
no.
Indonesia needs your concern.
