Dear Mrs. Madeleine Korbel Albright,
The Financial Times reported that a Pentagon study in October had said China was
pouring resources into missile development to improve its ability to prevail in a local
conflict on its south-eastern flank --- "especially in the Taiwan Strait
and South China Sea".
Taiwan decried China's reported deployment of new missile batteries, saying Beijing's
strategy of targeting the island posed a psychological as well as a military
threat.
The Taiwan ministry's unusually political statement said China's targeting of Taiwan
posed a serious threat, noting its menacing of the island with unarmed
ballistic missiles in 1996 had badly shaken the public. The move is likely
to strengthen calls in Washington for Taiwan's inclusion in a U.S.-backed theater missile
defense system.
An unnamed senior U.S. administration official told the newspaper that China
"couldn't assume that a continued missile built-up in southeast Asia will go
unanswered". China had 30 to 50 short-range ballistic missiles in its
southern area in 1996, when it launched the M-9 missiles into waters off Taiwan,
prompting President Bill Clinton to send two aircraft carrier task groups to the area.
In our views; don't let "co-operative strategic partnership" with Beijing
that confused the real threat from communist China.
So, Taiwan need your help.
