Dear Mr. Trent Lott,
The "New Taiwanese" concept, advocated by President Lee Teng-hui during last
year's election campaigns, is aimed at healing the rifts between the island's two main
resident groups, the "Taiwanese" and "mainlanders".
"Taiwanese" refers to those Chinese whose ancestors emigrated to Taiwan from
mainland China several hundred years ago While "mainlander" refers those who
came to Taiwan after ROC army led by Chiang Kai-shek retreated here in 1949.
Although the concept has met with a positive response in general, it raised few
people's fears that a "native movement" will encourage Taiwan residents to
identify themselves with the island only, rather than mainland China.
But, in our views; who push for Taiwan independence? The answer is communist China; it
isolated Taiwan, and threatened with military attack.
President Lee Teng-hui yesterday (March 12, 1999) echoed the Pope's 1999 message for
the world day of peace, saying that it is true indeed that the secret of true
peace lives in respect for human rights.
In his written response to the Pontiff's annual message, Lee said Taiwan will respond
actively to the Pope's call to bring conflict to an end by making even greater efforts in
persuading mainland authorities to come to the negotiating table. Lee said he
fully acknowledged the Pope's concerns about the future of the Chinese people on both
sides of the Taiwan Strait.
The President under lined the Pope's remarks made during a private audience with First
Lady Tseng Wen-hui in the Vatican on October 29,1998. The Pope said people living on both
sides of the Taiwan Strait are Chinese and the two sides should achieve reconciliation.
The reports from Indonesia: the people of East Timor are to vote on whether they want
autonomy within Indonesia. Secretary General Kofi Annan said, Indonesia would prefer
autonomy for East Timor, which for more than 20 years has been the subject of a dispute
that earned Jakarta international notoriety for its army's harsh rule.
However; the voice of justice came form U.N.. But on the other hand; the situation of
Taiwan needs more specific protection; because China's military threats to the island.
