Dear Mr. Trent Lott,
Mr. Denny Hastert,
Mr. Kofi A. Annan,
Lee's special state-to-state comments have found broad popular support, despite
tensions rising to their highest levels since 1996, when Beijing staged threatening
military displays in a show of anger over Taiwan's attempts to raise its international
profile.
In Beijing side, mainland Chinese leaders, who control every aspect of political life,
are increasingly concerned about the Falun Gong sect which, thanks to the internet, can
mobilize tens of thousands at will, diplomats said.
Beijing also views nervously its electronic organizational methods, which are seen as a
threat to the party's political and cultural dominance. The Communist Party, marking the
50th anniversary of its monopoly rule this year, has indicated extreme nervousness over
the group which claims to have 100 million members across mainland China and abroad.
Anyway, Beijing fears Falun Gong party. Because of it is hard to see them controlling
this thing, especially of that there are 100 million Falun Gong members out there.
They came out of nowhere to stand outside the building in a gutsy demonstration, the
biggest in the Chinese capital since the pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square 10
years ago. The party, Democratic Taiwan want to show freedom, independence, and dignity,
it could accept Beijing's "one China" on equal political position
and mutual respect.
However, if Clinton's statement urging Taiwan to give support for his China policy meant a
request for this island to accept Beijing's "one China" position as has the
U.S., it will definitely not be acceptable to Taiwan. For if Taiwan is to do so, it will
mean that this island will have to give up its ROC sovereignty and go to identify with the
communist PRC. Moreover, such a sovereignty change will put Taiwan's democratic system and
free lifestyle in jeopardy. This will never be accepted by Taiwan's 21 million people.
If the power balance in the Taiwan Strait was allowed to shift to mainland China's
favor, it could hurt the U.S. itself, because a Taiwan Strait controlled by the PRC would
undermine U.S. influence in the region and affect its efforts to protect American
strategic and economic interests in this part of the world.
Taiwan sincerely welcomes Washington's proposal for the sides of the strait to hold
direct talks to settle their differences. But Taiwan must insist on being
treated as an equal, such treatment is necessary ensure that this island can protect its
legitimate interest in talks.
Taiwan always needs your help.
