President Lee Teng-hui has warned repeatedly of the dangers of becoming economically
reliant on the Chinese market, where Taiwan companies have already sunk an
estimated US$30 billion.
Beijing threatens to use force to reunify with Taiwan, which it considers a breakaway
province. Lee maintains that unfettered investment in the mainland could reduce Taiwan's
bargaining power with Beijing.
