In Taiwan DPP presidential candidate Chen Shui-ban told an audience in London (Dec. 6, 1999) that he had vowed to develop a Taiwanese version of British Prime Minister Tony Blair "new middle way" if elected next March. "Although Taiwan lives with the contradiction of economic grandness and political isolation; we deeply believe that as long as Taiwan adheres to the 'new middle way' value of democracy, open trade and peace. We will find out space for survival and growth."
