China and Russia, which wrapped up a summit in Beijing (Dec. 10, 1999) slammed what they
called western countries use of human rights to "interfere" in the internal
affairs of other countries. "Both sides are against the use of placing human rights
higher than state sovereignty and using human rights to interfere or to harm and
independent country's sovereignty" said a joint communique released to reporters at
the summit.
Activists across Asia marked the United Nations International Human Rights Day on
Friday (Dec. 10, 1999) with calls for the release of political prisoners and an end to
rights abuses.
