prisoners to attend festival

A group of former political prisoners who were held on Green Island (ºñ®q) during
the Martial Law era and some family members have been invited to attend a
commemorative event on the outlying island this month, according to the Council
for Cultural Affairs.
More than 60 former prisoners and their family members will be guests of honor
at the 2011 Green Island Human Rights Arts Festival, which will begin on Tuesday
and which is the 60th anniversary of the first imprisonment of dissidents on the
island during what is known as the White Terror. The White Terror refers to the
suppression of political activists in Taiwan during the period of martial law
between 1949 and 1987.
The festival, now in its 10th year, will be held at Green Island¡¦s Human Rights
Memorial Park and aims to raise public awareness about the importance of human
rights, the council said.
One of the political prisoners who was held on the island, 84-year-old Chen Yu-shu
(³¯·Ô¼Ï), is scheduled to speak at the event. He will describe his experiences as a
prisoner on the island, which is located off the southeast coast of Taiwan
proper.
Well-known Taiwanese feminist writer Li Ang (§õ©ù), documentary makers and
Japanese reporters have also been invited to participate in the three-day event.
In May 1951, the first group of more than 1,000 political prisoners was sent to
a ¡§Freshman Disciplinary Camp¡¨ on Green Island, where they were subjected to
forced labor and psychological ¡§re-education.¡¨
