A Taiwanese team took the gold medal in
the women¡¦s 500kg event at the Tug-of-War International Federation¡¦s World
Outdoor Championships on Sunday in Appenzell, Switzerland.
The team, composed of students from Taipei Jingmei Girls¡¦ High School, won the
gold medal after competing against eight other teams: five from the host country
and one each from Belgium, Germany and Spain.
Taiwan beat all other teams 2-0, except for a 1-1 tie with a Swiss team.
Jingmei school principal Lin Li-hua (ªLÄRµØ) said that the rival teams, composed of
adults, looked more competitive given their age, physical build and competition
experience.
However, the school¡¦s representatives prevailed due to their superior endurance
and willpower, as well as a good strategy, Lin said.
The Taiwanese team was eliminated in the mixed men and women¡¦s 600kg category at
the championships, which ran from Thursday to Sunday.
Taiwan also won a silver medal in the women¡¦s 540kg category on Saturday.
The team, composed mainly of students from the Jingmei school, beat South Africa
3-0 in the semifinals before losing to Sweden 3-0 in the final. The result
surpassed Taiwan¡¦s fourth-place finish in the same category at the 2010
championships, its best record in the event.
In the bronze medal competition, the Netherlands defeated South Africa 2-1.
