A popular Taiwanese-style night market
returned to Los Angeles on Saturday with a giant surprise ¡X a 1.8m tall cup of
bubble tea.
The 626 Night Market, established by three enterprising Taiwanese-Americans, has
been held five times in the city since its debut in Pasadena, California, on
April 14 last year.
The markets each ran for two days and were flooded with tens of thousands of
people eager to get a taste of Taiwanese night-market snacks, organizers said,
adding that the one held on July 6 and July 7 drew a record 55,000 attendees.
The creator of the jumbo bubble tea, Chu Chia-chun (¦¶®a¶v), said the giant
beverage was designed to be taller than the average man.
The organizers also asked a tapioca ball manufacturer to produce chewy pearls
the same size as chicken eggs to go in the oversized drink, which had to be
frequently stirred and mixed with freshly brewed tea.
Large crowds greeted the unveiling of the gigantic beverage with a chorus of
cheers, lining up to pose for photographs while enjoying normal-sized cups of
bubble tea handed out by organizers.
The next 626 Night Market event is to take place on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.
