Japan to bestow national honors on four Taiwanese

The Japanese government on Tuesday announced that it will award medals to four Taiwanese for their contributions to promoting bilateral exchanges, Japan’s Interchange Association said.
The medals are to be given out later this year at ceremonies in Taipei, it added.
Academia Sinica fellow Liao I-chiu (廖一久), 78, will be awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, for his efforts to strengthen bilateral exchanges in the aquaculture industry, the association said.
Liao has played an important role in developing giant tiger prawn farming in Taiwan and has shared his experience with Japanese experts, the association said.
Also among the awardees is kendo master Wu Jin-pu (吳金璞), who has been a key figure in the development of the Japanese martial art and has taught it for about three decades, the association said.
Wu, 90, will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, it said.
In recognition of his promotion of Japanese culture, Tsai Kun-tsan (蔡焜燦) will be given the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays, the association said, adding that Tsai, 87, is an expert in a genre of classical Japanese poetry called tanka.
Cheng Cheng-hsiu (鄭正秀), a Taiwanese living in Japan, will also receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays, for the many years he has devoted to taking care of Japanese children with disabilities.
The four Taiwanese are among 55 foreigners from 31 countries to be honored by the Japanese government, the association said.
Tokyo twice a year bestows the national honors on foreigners who promote ties with or make contributions to Japan.
