¡@¡@A new survey shows that 51 percent of Americans would oppose U.S. military intervention in the event of an invasion of Taiwan by mainland China, while 37 percent would support such an intervention.

¡@¡@ The figures compare with 54 percent in favor of using U.S. troops if South Korea were to be attacked by North Korea and 58 percent if Iraq were to invade Saudi Arabia.

¡@¡@In those cases, 35 percent and 31 percent, respectively, of Americans would oppose U.S. military intervention, the poll shows.

¡@¡@If Yugoslavia were to attack one of its neighbors, only 35 percent of those surveyed would support intervention, while 53 percent would be opposed.

¡@¡@The results suggest that most Americans see it as in the U.S. national interest not to go to war with mainland China over Taiwan, says the Foreign Policy Association (FPA), the organization that conducted the opinion poll.

¡@¡@¡§Clearly, vital national security interests would be at stake, but perhaps so much so that Taiwan would have to be sacrificed,¡¨says the FPA.

¡@¡@Based in New York, the FPA is a national, non-profit, non-partisan, educational organization founded in 1918 to educate Americans about the significant international issues that influence their lives.

¡@¡@The question of military intervention was one of many asked under the topic of the role of the military in U.S. foreign policy.

¡@¡@A total of over 28,000 ballots from all over the United States were received, with an average of 3, 500 participants sending in ballots for each of the eight topics. Over 80 percent of the participants were college graduates.

¡@¡@Seventy-three percent of those surveyed agree that the United States should use its unrivaled military power to establish a¡§Pax Americana,¡¨but 84 percent disagree that the military advantage should be exploited to help the United States obtain world hegemony.
