FORMOSA HISTORY
French Stephane in Taiwan

Goal number 1: to serve Taiwan through diplomatic or cultural links

My name is Stephane Tignel. I am 26 years old. I have a master degree in literature.

Taiwan, where I have been staying for two years and a half, is a wonderful island. I live in Taichung, more specifically.

I tried my best to understand Taiwanese society and culture more than I did reading books and articles when I was in my country, France. I have been being teaching in a few schools. It gave me a lot of chances to help any kinds of students and meet their parents from time to time. I have never been teaching only one subject (English or French) but also a way to live and respect others and the environment. At the same time, this was my first step to learn directly from people.

The second opportunity to help for the promotion of Taiwan was given by Doctor Yang Hsu Tung, president of Taiwan Tati Cultural and Educational Foundation where I am a consultant in French. I am very grateful for Dr Yang's advices and all the things he has been teaching me. I have also learnt a lot from Peter Lin, Dr Yang's assistant for the international relations. Thank you to both of you. You're very special to me. Thank you to the members of the foundation that I know. You all showed me that Taiwanese are open-minded people who like to share ideas and viewpoints with foreigners.

I translated a few letters from Doctor Yang and wrote some. All of them were sent to Taiwan, French or European leaders. I think this grassroots diplomacy is an efficient way to express some ideas that I got after reading some articles and books, after observing and discussing with Taiwanese people and traveling all over the island.

Except all the hours I spend to discover Taiwan's beauty, I like to write some poems. Some of them have been published in France. An essay is also being published in a specialized magazine concerning Georges Bernanos, a French writer of the twentieth century. It is about the female teenager in his work. The (translated) title is: "From Rebellion to Suicide: Mouchette's Redemption".

The present CD-Rom contains a translation, from an English version, of the first part of a book written in Chinese by Dr Yang: Formosa History, in For Taiwan, vol. IX.
