Dear Mr. Vice President Al Gore,

It is hard for me to write letters to you so frequently. Whether it work or not; just only I express my opinion for worrying about the security of Taiwan.

In recent years, mainland China has been trying to include the arms-sales issue in its talks on non-proliferation of destructive weapons with the U.S.. With the aim of pressing Washington to cease selling weapons to Taiwan. Beijing has often attacked U.S. arm supply to Taiwan as a primary obstacle to improvement in bilateral relations.

There is concern in Taipei that Washington may eventually yield on the arms-sales issue in order to win Beijing's cooperation on non-proliferation and other matters in U.S.-mainland China relations.

To tell the truth; the Taiwan strait has been able to maintain peace over the last few decades mainly because this island has preserved a defense capability strong enough to deter military aggression by mainland China. Any kinds of U.S. suspension in arm sales will hurt the Taiwan strait's stability. Beijing has made clear that it would not hesitate. If necessary, to take Taiwan by force.

Peaceful Asia can improve the whole world's security. Taiwan-Beijing relation not only "the mainland so called to military intervene in Taiwan's internal affairs", but also democratic right is the power of future or none.

Those who propose that the United States terminate arm sales to this island must not forget that a Taiwan capable of defending itself against Communist aggression is also in line with America's strategic as well as economic interests in this part of the world.

Give best wishes to you, and your family

Sincerely Yours,
Yang Hsu-Tung.
