Dear Mr. President Clinton,
I try and try again to write letters to you for our country. It is with the best
sincere pleasure I write to you on the attention of your understand.
"Taiwan has no need to purchase new arms from the United States since it already
has enough weapons systems to counter a military attack from mainland China." a
former White House official Doug Poal said on Friday (March 27, 1998). He was quoted in
the report as suggesting that the U.S. government should suspend major arms sales to
Taiwan if Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive party continues to call for Taiwan
independence in a provocative manner. He expressed his opinion that the issue between
Taiwan and mainland China should be worked out by the Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan
strait, saying that only cross-strait negotiation can ease the tension.
A mainland Chinese academic Luan Ming, professor of Tamkang university, said(March 24,
1998): "They (Mainland Chinese) will attack Taiwan at any time if the Communist party
gives the order." "Since mainland China has in recent years established
different types of military partnership with world powers such as the United States and
Russia; Taiwan is now the only genuine arch-rival left for the mainland."
Nevertheless; on the edge of military attack, United States should act as major
censorship when cross-strait negotiation, that dependable average army powers make
balancce between Taiwan-mainland China's sensitivity. Whether mainland China will invade
Taiwan has aroused grave concern here, as Beijing has grealy expanded its military
exercise with Taiwan as its mock target.
It is dangerous to enforce Taiwan to determine the political negotiation, without
strengthening the background of Taiwan's weapons systems. On the other hand; loss of
Taiwan is the sign of Asia crisis, not only for economic but also military defeat that
closely concern about United States in Asian's handle. Chinese would be a major stream for
whole world, I believe that. If democratic countries urge mainland China advance to
democratic reformation; there aren't any reasons that Taiwan people aganst unification.
I try my best to describe what I mean, just want to built "resonance" of
ideology. More thanks to you.
