Japan's private fund for compensating wartime sex slaves is dead in the water, Asian politicians warned Tuesday after South Korea decided to pay the victims itself.

Japans so-called Asian Women's Fund should be abandoned and replaced with an official apology and reparation, said politicians from South Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines, gathered here for a two-day forum on the "comfort women". "We demand the Japanese government give state reparation and punishment of criminals and an official apology." said Lee Mi-Kyung, chair woman of a South Korea parliamentary association on the World War II sex slaves.

Historian say some 200,000 young women, mostly from Korea, but also from China, Philippines and Indonesia, where some Dutch girls were also press-ganged --- served in Japanese army brothels during World War II. Tokyo's response has been to set up a private, non-government, Asian Women's Fund for the victims, most of whom are elderly.

ROC legislator, Kao Alice Huei-eu told the same news conference, said the island had 42 verified victims of sex slavery and 42 of them have formally refused the Asian Women's Fund. "All they want is a very dignified compensation including a very formal public and legal apology from the government of Japan" she said.
