Dear Mr. President Bill Clinton,

Please read the funny story. Wang Dan, one of the top student leaders during the 1989 prodemocracy movement, was handed at 11-years jail term in October 1996 for "subversion" after having been held in secret for 14 months.

The parents of prominent dissent, Wang Dan, have asked the United Nations Human Rights Commission to intercede with communist Chinese authorities and help free him from prison(April 8, 1998).

" We hope you can urge the Chinese government to act in accordance with Chinese law and to allow Wang Dan to undergo a neurological exam, preventing further damage to his health and threat to his life." Wang's father and mother said in a letter dated March 19.

Pushing for rapport across the Taiwan strait, the government yesterday(April 7,1998) reported to join forces with mainland China to seek a resolution to the financial crisis in southeast Asia.

During a meeting with visiting U.S. congressman Dana Rohrabacher, ROC President Lee Teng-hui said the government was very concerned about the crisis and would urge Beijing to cooperate in bringing southeast Asian nations together in order to find ways to stabilize finances and promote regional growth. In addition to calling high-level meetings to study counter-measures, Taipei had sent economic officials on fact-finding missions to different Asian countries, Lee said. Lee put forth the proposal on the eve of the third anniversary of the release of a six-point plan for cross-strait relations, which urged relations to proceed in the spirit of "Chinese helping Chinese".

" President Lee has put special emphasis on contributing to international communication through cooperation between Chinese from both sides of the Taiwan strait despite their political difference." "The plan would benefit both cross-strait relations and regional development." "Government is pursing peace in the Taiwan strait and the future reunification of China under a system that is democratic, free and enjoys an equal distribution of wealth." "We realize that this is going to be a long process, during which both sides should engages in international cooperation despite political differences." Premier Vincent Siew further elaborated on Lee's ideas said that.

The reaction of Beijing on Tuesday (April 7,1998) threw cold water on Taipei's suggestion the two sides meeting with financial crisis-hit southeast Asian countries to coordinate aid efforts.

Mainland Chinese Foreign Minister spokesman Zhu Bangzao admitted he was unaware of exact remarks made by Premier Vincent Siew, but said: "Taiwan authorities have no right to participate in something that has to be done by sovereign states". It accesses Taipei of taking advantage of the situation to boost its diplomatic agenda by offering funds in exchange for improved relations and supports.

Foreign Minister Joson Hu flatly denied the allegations. "We would never use our coordinative role in the southeast Asian financial crisis to seek IMF membership". I don't know why sovereign state like Taiwan must be frozen by "powerful Beijing". Wang Dan was put in jail for a long time. Why the democratic root must be cut by "international autism"?

The most simplest religious ceremony from recent mission to bring back a relic purported to be a 2000-year-old tooth of Lord Buddha that a holy tooth which Taiwan hopes will improve its fortunes(April 9, 1998). Beijing attempt to cast doubt on the authenticity of the tooth believed to have come from the mouth of Buddha appeared motivated more by politics than by religion. The 2000-year-old tooth was given to Taiwan by Buddhist monks in India who say it was taken from a temple in Tibet in 1968, when mainland China was in the throes of the Cultural Revolution during which many ancient rebis and sites were destroyed by fanatic Red Guards.

"Tibet's top spiritual leaders, the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama, had never mentioned the existence of a Buddha tooth in the Malayan region." "There was no record that a tooth of the Buddha has ever been in Tibet." The Mainland's state-run Xinhua New Agency on Wednesday(April 8, 1998) quoted a spokesman for the Chinese Buddhist Association said that.

Buddhists believes the "tooth of Buddha" can improve the fortune of Taiwan; may it work? Taipei "yes", Beijing "no"!

That is a "Zero-peace's" game. Where to find a real and mature adult for Chinese future?

Sincerely Yours,
Yang Hsu-Tung.
