Dear Mr. Vice President Al Gore,

Malaysia; Anwar faces up to 20 years imprisonment and a caning, but the charges could also rebound against his accusers. "If Anwar is acquitted it will be difficult for Mahathir to survive." Says Chandra Muzzafar --- a professor of political science at the university of Malaya.

"If he is convicted, and if people feel the evidence is overwhelmingly in his favor, then Anwar's conviction won't help Mahathit. Either way Mahathir will be in trouble."

That's why this trial is more than a show. "Anwar need a good trial; we wait and see." APEC leaders have the same idea, isn't it ?

"I have already made a very detailed statement about Anwar, our position is we want a transparent trial. I said that to Dr. Mahathir, I didn't say it in a speech (in APEC), I said it to him" Australian Prime Minister John Howard distanced himself yesterday (Nov. 17 1998). Asked it be supported the "reformasi" movement for democracy in Malaysia. Howard said " What Australia supports is a transparent trial of him, what Australia support is continuing moves in all countries to more open and democratic societies". "But we also respect the right of countries to have the system of government they think it best for their society" he added.

"Every society is different and you don't necessarily achieve a desirable outcome by constantly hectoring other nations" he said.

In our view; whether Malaysia government is democracy or not, the basic human rights, must be done by human spirit. Every country is a part of our world.

Malaysia is not a deserted village.

Anwar need your support.

Sincerely Yours,
Yang Hsu-Tung.
