Deviated government policies cost Taiwan's cultural development

Before the Japanese rule, Taiwanese used the orthodox culture of central China as its blueprint for Taiwan’s education. The blueprint was generated from traditional Chinese drama, the scripts were originally from central China. For example, Taiwanese Opera was meant to be performed solely for the deities’ entertainment, the tones the performers used were northerners’ tones. Later, under Japan’s rein, all traditional plays and music entertainments were prohibited, though privately people still found ways to develop and pass down the music and drama. Problems came after the Nationalist bureaucracy came to power; KMT bureaucracy thought Taiwanese consciousness was too strong, hence the government suppressed Taiwanese Opera performances and the Taiwanese dialect. Taiwanese dialect was pressed down to the lowest levels of the society’s hierarchy, and its humanity development was obstructed. It is a shame that it was our own government that choked our Taiwanese spirit.

The truth is, when Taiwan was named Pon-Lai Deities’ Island, it has been chosen as the base of Chinese nation’s spirit. Our “heavenly-duty” has destined us to go back to the mainland to extend China’s lifeline. God sent His messenger to Taiwan in the hope of awakening the people’s special qualities, but how many people did understand him? Why is Taiwan called Pon-Lai Deities’ Island?  “Deities’ Island” is an island where numerous deities are reborn in, it is where every soul dreams to come to. The sad thing is, we do not respect ourselves and things that we should have owned. Now we are not practicing Chinese philosophy, and the Taiwanese spirit is losing, too. People in their fifties, sixties and above know the right ways to be a member of this society; they learned loyalty, filial piety, fidelity, righteousness etc. from watching Taiwanese Opera and puppet shows when they were growing up.
