Dear Mr. Kofi A. Annan,
"Not only hosts need to know how to treat their guests in a courteous
way, the guests also need to do the other way round", new mainland
affairs Chief Su Chi has reportedly threatened to expel a mainland Chinese official over
what he said was the visitor's insult to the island's national flag,
newspapers said Sunday (Feb. 7, 1999).
Su Chi, chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council since February 1, has warned that Lin
Liyun, an advisor to China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait would be
deported should she continue to show disrespect to Taiwan's national flag,
newspaper said.
The China Times and the United Daily News said Su, who demanded "mutual
respect" in handling bilateral exchanges issued the stern warning at a council
meeting Friday. The reports said Taiwan born Lin, a central committee member of the
Chinese Communist Party and vice president of the All-China Women's Federation, refused to
attend a reception in her honor in her hometown of Chingshui Thursday until the host
agreed to cover the national flag. She was born in Chingshui in 1933 but has lived in
Beijing since 1952.
Su said it was not the first time Lin has requested removal of the Taiwan
flag. During her last visit to Hualien county, Su said, Lin made the same
request before attending a public event. The same episode took place during ARATS Deputy
Secretary General Li Yafei's last call at the Kenting National Park administration in
southern Taiwan, Su said . He added that the people of Taiwan have often had a bad
impression of mainland visitors because of such behavior.
In our views; the officers from communist China need more respect to democratic Taiwan.
