Mainland China Tuesday warned exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama from attending the May 20 inauguration ceremony of Taiwan’s newly-elected president Chen Shui-bian. 

“The Dalai Lama has long been engaged in activities aimed at splitting the motherland. His political purpose for visiting Taiwan is quite obvious,” foreign ministry spokesman Sun Yuzi said.

Sun indicated that any attempt by the Dalai Lama to visit Taiwan would be considered an act aimed at splitting either Tibet or Taiwan from the motherland.

“We are opposed to any attempt by any person to conduct political activities to split the motherland and undermine national harmony by whatever means,” Sun said.

In Taipei Monday, You His-kun, secretary general of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) with which Chen is affiliated, was cautious when asked if Chen would risk angering Beijing by inviting Tibetan officials.

“The list of foreign guests has yet to be worked out,” You told AFP.
